Hello [FNAME]

Summer 2020

Welcome to this Summer Issue 2020.

Xmas is but a week away, so it's time to rejoice, relax and reflect on what the year has been. My apologies to all my avid readers, I am sorry for this late edition. I remember a few years back our beloved Lizzie HRH remarked about "annus horribilus" in reference to what a horrible year it had been, well I'm sure this one tops it. I would say "Ut numquam obliviscar MMXX.. never forget 2020. Remember stay safe and be kind! Our thanks to all and new for your continued custom, very much appreciated.

Brain Teaser

1. A man is looking at a photograph of someone. His friend asks who it is. The man replies, “Brothers and sisters, I have none. But that man’s father is my father’s son.” Who was in the photograph?

2. What makes this number unique: 8,549,176,320?

3. What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?

4. The person who makes it has no need for it. The person who purchases it does not use it. The person who does use it does not know he or she is. What is it?

A Bit of History

When Uncle Sam came to New Zealand……

With the “friendly invasion” by US forces in 1942, New Zealanders got, many for the first time, to meet men and some women who spoke just like Clark Gable, called women “Ma’am”, men “Sir” and chewed gum, drank Coke and already had rows of ribbon bars on their starched, pressed uniforms.
The stories of US Forces in this country could, and have, filled many a book - some sad, some funny and some stranger than fiction. Many lasting relationships also had their beginnings at this time.
This issue’s item relates to the American Kiwi Club that was set up by the YWCA in 1944 to “educate” young women who would be starting their new life in the States. It was originally was called the American Wives and Sweethearts’ Club but I would guess that this was too much open to misinterpretation!
Over 600 girls, many already wives and mothers, attended talks to learn about their new home and meet others who would be making the same journey.
Meetings were held in the Down Town Club in Queen Street run by the YWCA who also operated a creche for mothers to leave their children while they learnt about life in the New World.
When the future US citizens went on their adventure to the land of Uncle Sam, the Canadian war brides moved in. Presumably to learn about their new life in New Zealand!

Our Weekend
What a delight, at last some better weather. The garden is magnificient at the moment, rocket, beetroot, leeks, lettuce and vast array of herbs. Courgettes will be planted post Xmas. Jan and I have had a crack at replacing a delapidated retaining wall and it proved a very satisfing build. Very professional if I must say so though we both wish we could roll back the clock a few years as the body was certainly tested by the time we had finished.
